The Word Hyperbaric means greater than normal pressure and
refers to gases such as oxygen and nitrogen that make up most
of the air that we breathe. Hyperbaric therapy is the use of
gases at greater than normal pressure for therapeutic reasons
and has been in use for over 50 years.
HBOT, or Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, uses 100% Oxygen
delivered at greater than one atmosphere pressure; that is, pressure
greater than you would experience at sea level. We have all seen the movies where they rush the deep sea divers into the hyperbaric chamber to
decompress him to prevent the bends. Although our chambers could be used for
such a treatment, we provide therapy for many other conditions.
So, what does 100% oxygen at high pressure do for you? It "force-feeds" oxygen to your blood, tissues, and cells. This promotes better healing and helps to fight infection.
What Does A Hyperbaric Chamber Look Like?
Our hyperbaric chambers are made by Sechrist™. These "top of the line"
chambers represent the Rolls Royce of hyperbaric chamber design. The
Sechrist 3200 monoplace hyperbaric chamber is a pneumatically
controlled system, which features a spacious 32 inch inside diameter
acrylic cylinder for increased patient mobility and comfort. Important
capabilities such as ventilation support and intravenous infusion can also
be provided. Transcutaneous and other monitoring is possible via
electrical ports and pass-throughs. Additional features include a
hyperbaric gurney for easy patient transport, an intercom system for
two-way private conversation and an auxiliary audio-input for patient
entertainment.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Side effects are uncommon. Most of these are related to the increased pressure. High pressure can make your eardrums bulge inward and is alleviated by simply holding your nose, closing your mouth and blowing to equalize the pressure. The high levels of oxygen can cause lung oxygen toxicity or visual changes. This visual change is usually near-sightedness and resolves within 3-4 months of cessation of therapy.
Your doctor will discuss these prior to your treatment. If at anytime you have a question or you just feel uncomfortable in the chamber, one of our staff is readily available.
